Results from Questionnaire

In order to gain some additional information about my target audience, I decided to create a questionnaire that I would give to them. I have previously shared a post containing the questions that were on the questionnaire. Since then I have received the results from the questionnaire.

One of the things that I found out from my questionnaire is that people normally watch the accompanying music video to a song that they enjoy listening to. Peoples main reasons for doing this is out of interest. Therefore this result shows that often the artists song has to be good because people listen to that first and then view the video at a later date to see how the artist has visually represented the lyrics.

As well as this, I also found that our target audience also prefer to listen to R&B and Pop. This is important information to know because it means that we are able to fit a song that falls into this genre of music. As there is no point in choosing a song that is not appealing to our target audience as it means they are less likely to want to watch the music video.

I also found that it varies how many times our target audience chooses to watch a music video. Some people prefer to watch the video just once so that they can visualise the storyline behind the song, where as other people watch the video several times, particularly if they find the video interesting.

Overall, I think that the questionnaire that I created was useful to our audience research. Particularly because it helped us decide on our final song choice, which is Disturbia - Rihanna as this falls into our target audiences preferred genre of music. If I didn't create the questionnaire I would be unaware of what our target audience prefers to listen to and as a result of this we may have chose a song that was unappealing.

If I was to recreate this questionnaire I would add more questions, as the more information we can collect about our target audience the more likely we are to appeal to them successfully. As well as this, I would add more answer options on some of the questions as I think that some of them are quite limited in terms of what the audience can reply with. In contrast to this, I do think that I created a good amount of opened and closed questions as I gave my audience the opportunity to explain some of their answers.

Song choice

We have decided to recreate a music video to Rihanna - Disturbia. Whilst researching into an artist we wanted them to be a young female who is popular in the charts. Therefore Rihanna fits perfectly into this category as she is a very current artist and only age 26.  Rihanna became extremely popular with the release of her album Good Girl Gone Bad in 2007 and since then has continued to top the charts with a number of singles. Such as Umbrella and Only Girl In The World.

After carrying out research I found that Disturbia is one of Rihanna's best selling singles and reached no.1 in the US billboard charts. Therefore it is most likely that our target audience (16-24 year olds) will recognise the song and listened to it willingly in the past. Moreover, we think that it will be a good idea to recreate the music video to this song because of these reasons as it will be a popular choice.

We also think that it would be good idea to recreate Disturbia because of the feedback we received from our questionnaire that we gave to our target audience. Since carrying out this research we found that the majority of people enjoy listening to R&B and pop, as their preferred genre of music. Rihanna fits into this category perfectly as she creates both a mixture of pop and R&B tracks. Therefore she will appeal to our target audience.

As well as this, we decided that we wanted to aim our music video at a female audience whilst aiming it at some males. I think that Rihanna is the ideal artist to do this with. I think that Rihanna appeals to a female audience because of her choice in lyrics as they are generally about love. However I think that males also might be interested in listening to some of her tracks because she is an attractive female.

'Do I Wanna Know' AM Music Video A2 Media - Analysis

Firstly, one of things that the students have included in this music video is the use of lip syncing. This is an important element to include when creating a  music video, although I do think that the lip syncing does not look as professional as it could do in this particular video. I think that the lip syncing could look more effective if the actors opened their mouths slightly wider.

However saying this, I do like the opening of the music video. In particularly how the shots match up with the beat of the music. For example when they sit down on the wall. Furthermore, one of the other things that I like about this music video is the use of guitar playing at the beginning of the video and the use of the video cutting from a performance to a narrative style. I think that it is effective to include more than one style as it is more likely to keep the audience interested in the video as the dynamics change.

However, one of the things that I dislike about this video is some of the chosen locations. I think that at points this video has the ability to look quite professional. Although some of the locations spoil this in my opinion. One of the things that I don't like about this music is the use of lighting in the car scene. I that this scene in particular makes the video look worse than it should.

On the other hand, one of the things that I like about this music video is some of the effects that have been used. An example of this is the effects used at the end of the music video. I think that it was effective to use these as it makes the dynamic of the video more interesting for the target audience to watch.

Overall, I think that this music video has some good features, such as the use of a guitar, which I mentioned previously. Although on the whole I think it could be improved a lot by changing a few things. For example the lighting in some of the shots. Moreover, I also think that the students could've used some more interesting locations in order to keep the audience interested. This is something that we should consider when creating our own music video as simple things such as the mise en scene can affect the overall look of the video. Therefore it is important that we have a good location, costume etc and think carefully about these aspects before shooting our video.

9.     Do you normally only watch a music video once or several times? Why?

This is the questionnaire that I created about music videos. I thought that it would be a good idea to hand out this questionnaire in order to get some audience feedback from our target audience which is people aged between 16-24.  Although our target audience is primarily females, a male might also be interested in watching our video. Therefore I will hand out the questionnaire to both genders. I think that it will be interesting so see how the different genders respond to the questions.

Once we have received the answers from our questionnaire we will be able to develop a greater understanding of what genre of music that the target audience prefer to listen to and what type of music videos they enjoy watching.

As well as this we will be able to use this information effectively to create a music video that our target audience are interested in watching. Furthermore, once we have a majority decision of what type of music our target audience prefer to listen to it will make narrowing down our song choice a lot easier.

Target audience

Before creating our music video it is important that we decide on a target audience so that we know who we are aiming our video at. There are specific things that should be included when trying to target a different age group. This is because young people for example have different interests to older people. As well as this different genders have different interests, something a male would deem as interesting might not necessarily target a female audience. Therefore these are all factors that we need to consider before deciding on a target audience.

I think that because we have decided to recreate a video for a female artist it is most likely that our main target audience will be females. This is because I think that a female is more inclined to listen to a female artist than a male is. However a smaller number of males might still be interested in watching our music video. As it is down to the individual person and their own music taste.

I also think that the age group that we will also be targeting will be young people. These are people aged between 16-24. I think that young people display more of an interest in watching music videos than older people. This is because young people are more likely to use the rsources around them such as social networking and YouTube where the music videos may be displayed or promoted. Where as older people are more likely to hear the song through the radio

What is a digipak?

Definition of Digipak - "Digipak is a patented style of CD, DVD or BD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI-Shorewood, an Atlas Holdings LLC company."

As part of our coursework we have to create a digipak for our chosen artist and song that we are recreating.  A digipak is similar to a standard CD case. However it is typically made out of paperboard or card.  A digipak can hold one or more CDs. Digipak's are often used to make the product appear more expensive and they often open up like a book, for example the above image.

Digipak's are often used for when artist realises a specialist album. This is because digipak's are different to the standard CD case and offer a luxury look and therefore an artist choses to use them when they are creating something that is special to them. For example a limited edition CD or an artists greatest hits.

When creating our own digipak there are several things that we need to consider such as the colour scheme, the images of the artist or symbols to represent them, different fonts and what information we want the digipak to include.

The above image displays a template of what a digipak should look like. As you can see from this image it can contain more than one CD and they tend to open in a book like formation.  When we create our own digipak we should try and use a similar template in order to create a professional look.
